One of my favorite spots for intimate romantic elopements and wedding days is along Lake Como, in the Alpine foothills of Italy. It’s a location that has enchanted artists, actors, and lovers for centuries. Known for its dramatic lake views, elegant and historic estates, and romantic boat culture make it a fairy‑tale backdrop for a lavish wedding day or intimate elopement. With so many beautiful locations, it can be hard to decide where to plan your special day. That’s why I’ve created this Lake Como elopement guide to showcase my favorite spots in this corner of Italy!

Tips for Getting Married in Italy

Italy recognizes both religious and civil ceremonies. While the embassy will be able to give you the most updated information on how to legally get married in Lake Como, you’ll generally need your passports, birth certificates, witnesses, and a declaration of intent to marry. Many couples opt to get legally married at home in a small ceremony or courthouse elopement. Then they plan a celebratory Italian wedding celebration! You can enjoy the beauty and splendor of Lake Como without worrying about the legality of the ceremony.  

When should we plan to elope in Lake Como?

The weather around Lake Como is often best between April and September. The rest of the year is still gorgeous, but you’re more likely to get rainy and cooler weather. If you want to spend time outdoors during your event, consider planning your Lake Como elopement between April and September! 

Legendary Villa Venues for Your Lake Como Elopement

Lake Como is full of incredible villas that often double as venues for weddings and elopements. Below, I’m sharing some of my favorite spots for your Lake Como celebration! 

Villa del Balbianello

Villa del Balbianello is an 18th‑century estate on a wooded peninsula. It was originally a monastery and you might recognize the terraced gardens from films like Star Wars and Casino Royale. Between 60-130 guests can attend your event depending on where you plan to hold your elopement or celebration. The terrace overlooks the water and I love being able to dance and dine under the stars listening to the sounds of Lake Como around you. Like many spots around the lake, the Villa del Balbianello is only accessible by private boat and your guests (and you!) will need to find lodging somewhere else, as no accommodations are on site. 

Villa Balbiano

The Villa Balbiano is a gorgeous 16th century building that’s perfect for luxurious Italy elopements. This villa is known for its pools and gardens – and even has a private marina! Villa Balbiano can accommodate between 55 and 200 guests and recently underwent refurbishment to restore the original frescos and ceiling artwork. It’s absolutely stunning! Guests can stay onsite here, making your planning even easier. I personally love the incredible gardens, where you can host a waterfront wedding ceremony and the private dock for those sweet newlywed portraits. 

Villa Monastero 

 This enchanting location, originally a 12th-century convent, was transformed in the late 19th century into an eclectic villa. It’s absolutely stunning – surrounded by botanical gardens and scenic lakeside paths.Villa Monastero’s historic charm and serene setting make it ideal for elopements and intimate photography sessions. Please note that a permit is required here for photos. I love the lakeside pier, walking trails and atmosphere. It’s so dreamy! 

Villa d’Este

Villa d’Este was originally a 16th-century cardinal’s villa and has now become an ultra-luxury hotel. Welcoming guests since 1873, this villa is known as an escape for countless historical figures and celebrities over the years. Boasting 152 rooms and suites (including private villas), this proprietary has 25 acres of Renaissance gardens, a floating swimming pool, a world-class spa, and Michelin-level dining, it offers an unmatched experience in opulence. Perfect for high-end weddings and multi-day celebrations!
