Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions of your wedding planning. As you begin your search, you’ll find many photographers whose work you like. So, how do you know who to hire? Today, I’m sharing 5 questions to ask your Tampa wedding photographer before booking them. It’s important to find a photographer that fits your style, but you also want to find someone you like and trust. Figuring out who to hire shouldn’t be a nightmare, so I recommend starting with these 5 questions as you interview potential photographers for your Florida wedding day!

What is your style?

As you begin looking for your Tampa wedding photographer, it’s important to know the style of photography you’re looking for. I don’t just mean editing styles – although that’s important, too.  Before you even get to the final images, ask your photographer how they approach photographing weddings. Are they more photojournalistic – meaning they focus on candid and in-the-moment images with fewer poses? Or do you want more posing and more traditional wedding images? That’s more portrait based photography. After you know the style that you’re looking for, think about the look you want. Do you prefer portraits that are light and airy or moodier? Remember, a photographer is not going to suddenly change their editing style for you – so if you hire someone who focuses on light and bright images, you won’t get moodier ones. Ask your photographer both about their photography style and editing choices.

How do you help us prepare for our wedding day?

It’s important that the photographer you hire is someone who’s going to support you both on your wedding day and in the days leading up to your wedding. Ask your potential photographers what their process is like. Find out if they’re helping you prepare at all – tips, creating a timeline, and the timeframes their final meetings are on. Understanding how your wedding photographer is going to help you prepare for your wedding day is vital to hiring someone who will truly feel like a team member! It’s also important to find out about their experience and what it’s like to work with them on the day of your wedding!

What do your packages include?

One of the most important things to find out about a photographer is whether or not they’re in your budget! Tampa wedding photographers will often raing from $3,000 to $5,000+ depending on experience. Packages will vary greatly between businesses, so make sure you know what your options include: travel costs, hours of coverage, photographers, experience, and final delivery (online gallery, album, etc.). I highly recommend keeping a list to compare between photographers, but make sure that you’re interviewing photographers. It’s important to be in your budget – but you also want someone you trust and are comfortable with!

What is your backup plan for bad weather or if something goes wrong?

Tampa weddings can be rainy, windy, or bright and sunny. Ask potential photographers about their backup plans on the day of the wedding. Do they carry extra equipment? It’s important that if something breaks, they can still do their job for you. Don’t forget to ask about if images are recorded on two cards or just one. You want to feel comfortable with how images are stored! Now, for some couples, this tech stuff is SUPER important. It may not be for everyone – so just make sure you’re comfortable with the knowledge that your images are protected and no matter what happens, your photographer will do their job. You can also ask about backup photographers and what they do if it rains on your wedding day. Anything that helps you feel more confident about your photos is key to ask.

When will we receive our images?

I always recommend that couples ask potential wedding photographers how long it will be until they receive their images. This is often outlined in their contracts, but it’s good to know ahead of time! Some photographers offer sneak peeks before the full gallery is done, but often the full gallery takes 4-6 weeks. This is also the perfect time to review how images are delivered to you.  If you’re getting an album or any physical products with your photos, ask about those timeframes and processes, too!

But wait… you didn’t ask if they’ve photographed at my venue!

If you noticed, I didn’t mention anything about asking your photographer if they’ve worked at your venue before. While this is a common question I get from couples, I don’t think it’s necessary. A wedding photographer with experience should be able to work anywhere – and everywhere. You can totally ask if they know special spots, but the reality is that they should be able to do their job, no matter where you’re getting married. I recommend checking out their website and social media, and even ask for full galleries if you want to see their ability to capture a day. But I personally don’t think they have to have worked at your venue before to be effective!

Choosing your dream Tampa wedding photographer may feel overwhelming now, but the bottom line is to find someone you like working with and that meets all of your needs! Focus on finding a photographer with a style you like, that fits in your budget, and offers the final products that you want. Then you can check off one more thing on your wedding to-do list!

I love getting to capture these special moments so that you can remember your wedding day for the rest of your life! For me, your wedding day is so much more than just a day.

You deserve a wedding photographer who is invested in you and capturing every moment! Reach out and let’s connect to book your wedding day here in Florida (or around the world)!
